Trip Description

This high-altitude journey combines two of the most spectacular regions of the Khumbu: the turquoise lakes of Gokyo and the legendary trail to Everest Base Camp. From the first steps in the Dudh Koshi Valley to the rugged moraine paths alongside the Khumbu Glacier, each day reveals a new landscape and a deeper sense of the Himalaya’s immense scale. You pass through Sherpa villages where prayer flags flutter above stone walls, acclimatise gradually as the air thins, and reach viewpoints where Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, and Cho Oyu dominate the horizon. The trek is demanding, but it rewards you with profound silence, vast mountain panoramas, and the unforgettable atmosphere of the world’s most iconic trekking region.

DAY 1 – Arrival in Kathmandu

On arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you are welcomed and transferred to your hotel. Passport details and photos are collected to prepare the trekking permits. The rest of the day is kept free so you can recover from the journey and settle into the rhythm of Nepal. Overnight in Kathmandu.

DAY 2 – Kathmandu exploration and trek preparation

After breakfast, you discover Kathmandu, one of the world’s oldest living capitals, where sacred sites and daily life blend into a vivid, timeless scene. You visit Durbar Square, once the royal heart of the valley, with temples rising around the old palace of Hanuman Dhoka. You also see Kasthamandap, the historic wooden structure linked to the city’s name, and the temple associated with the Living Goddess tradition, where devotees gather in quiet reverence. Later, you continue to Swayambhunath, the hilltop stupa known for its all seeing Buddha eyes and its sweeping views over the valley. In the afternoon, you meet your trekking guide and review equipment to ensure everything is ready for the days ahead. Overnight in Kathmandu.

DAY 3 – Kathmandu to Manthali, flight to Lukla, trek to Phakding

Before dawn, you depart by road for Manthali, a journey that takes several hours through the sleeping countryside. From Manthali, you fly to Lukla, an unforgettable approach into the mountains with dramatic ridgelines and a striking landing strip carved into the hillside. After meeting the trekking team, you begin walking along the Dudh Koshi valley on a well marked trail, passing small settlements and mani walls carved with prayers before reaching Phakding. Overnight in a lodge in Phakding.

DAY 4 – Trek to Namche Bazaar

Today the trail becomes more dramatic as you cross suspension bridges high above rushing rivers, moving steadily upstream through pine forests and riverside villages. Beyond Monjo you enter Sagarmatha National Park, a protected Himalayan landscape of steep valleys and high passes. The climb into Namche is demanding, but if the weather is clear, this is often the day you catch your first distant glimpse of Everest. Namche Bazaar appears like an amphitheatre of stone houses and lodges, the commercial heart of the Khumbu where traders, yak caravans, and trekkers converge. Overnight in a lodge in Namche.

DAY 5 – Acclimatisation in Namche

A full day is devoted to acclimatisation, allowing your body to adjust before the route gains more altitude. Namche is built between ridgelines and surrounded by towering peaks, offering excellent viewpoints and quiet walks. You may visit Khunde Hospital, founded through the legacy of Sir Edmund Hillary, or hike up to the Everest View area for sweeping panoramas of Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Everest. The museum and national park visitor centre above the town also provide insight into Sherpa life and the fragile mountain environment. Overnight in Namche.

DAY 6 – Trek to Dole

Leaving the main Everest trail, you turn toward the quieter route leading to Gokyo. The path moves across ridges and valleys with wider views opening toward high Himalayan giants. As you gain altitude, the forests thin and the landscape becomes more rugged and exposed. The day ends in Dole, a small settlement surrounded by high pastureland and open skies. Overnight in a lodge in Dole.

DAY 7 – Trek to Machhermo

A steady climb continues toward Machhermo, with the air noticeably thinner. The views toward Cho Oyu and the surrounding peaks grow more impressive as you move deeper into the Gokyo region. In the warmer months, yaks graze on the slopes, and the trail winds through sparse vegetation and high altitude terrain that feels increasingly remote. Overnight in a lodge in Machhermo.

DAY 8 – Trek to Gokyo

You continue upward toward the lakes, where the first flashes of turquoise appear against the grey and brown mountain world. These high altitude waters feel almost unreal, reflecting the sky and surrounding ridges. You arrive in Gokyo village beside the lakes, with the massive Ngozumpa Glacier nearby and snow capped peaks framing the horizon. Overnight in a lodge in Gokyo.

DAY 9 – Acclimatisation in the Gokyo region

This day is kept for acclimatisation and for absorbing the extraordinary setting. The presence of the Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest in the Himalaya, gives the valley a powerful, raw atmosphere. You have time to rest, walk nearby trails, and let your body adapt, while the changing light over the lakes creates a constantly shifting landscape. Overnight in Gokyo.

DAY 10 – Gokyo Ri and trek to Dragnag

An early start takes you up Gokyo Ri before sunrise, a climb that is steep but deeply rewarding. From the summit, the Himalayan panorama unfolds in every direction, with Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu among the giants on display. After returning to the village, you cross the Ngozumpa Glacier, a surreal landscape of rock, ice, and shifting moraine, and continue to Dragnag for the night. Overnight in a lodge in Dragnag.

DAY 11 – Cho La Pass to Dzongla

A long and challenging day takes you over Cho La Pass, one of the classic high passes of the region. The ascent is rocky and steep, and conditions can be demanding depending on the season. Reaching the top brings a sense of achievement and a striking mountain view, followed by a careful descent across glacier sections and rugged slopes toward Dzongla. Overnight in a lodge in Dzongla.

DAY 12 – Trek to Lobuche

You rejoin the main Everest route, where the landscape becomes broader and more austere. The trail passes memorials dedicated to Sherpas and climbers who lost their lives on the mountain, a moving reminder of the power and risk of these peaks. The path gradually leads to Lobuche, set among moraine and stone, with the Khumbu Glacier close by. Overnight in a lodge in Lobuche.

DAY 13 – Trek to Gorak Shep and climb Kala Patthar

You follow the edge of the Khumbu Glacier toward Gorak Shep, walking through a high altitude world of boulders, ice, and wind. After reaching Gorak Shep and taking a break, you head up Kala Patthar, one of the best viewpoints in the Everest region. As the light shifts, Everest rises sharply above the surrounding peaks, with Nuptse and Pumori completing the dramatic skyline. You return to Gorak Shep for the night. Overnight in a lodge in Gorak Shep.

DAY 14 – Everest Base Camp and return toward Lobuche

An early start brings you along the glacier route toward Everest Base Camp, where the terrain becomes more complex and the path weaves through moraine and icy formations. Standing at base camp is a powerful moment, surrounded by the Khumbu Icefall area and the vast amphitheatre of rock and ice that climbers must face. After taking in the scene, you return along the trail and head back toward Lobuche for the night. Overnight in a lodge in Lobuche.

DAY 15 – Trek to Pangboche

The route begins to descend, and with every step the air becomes richer. You pass through Pheriche, where you can stop at the Himalayan Rescue Association post, a place dedicated to altitude awareness and mountain safety. Continuing along the river valleys, you cross suspension bridges and follow the Imja Khola to Pangboche, a beautiful Sherpa village known for its traditional atmosphere and its proximity to Ama Dablam’s striking silhouette. Overnight in a lodge in Pangboche.

DAY 16 – Pangboche and the Khumbu valley atmosphere

This day allows a gentler rhythm as you take in the village life and the surrounding landscapes. The stone walls, grazing fields, and monasteries of the Khumbu carry a calm presence, and the views remain immense even as you move lower. Overnight in Pangboche.

DAY 17 – Trek back to Namche Bazaar

The trail leads through forests of rhododendron and birch, with repeated panoramic views of the great peaks that define the region, including Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Everest. Passing through Tengboche area and along the Dudh Koshi crossings, you continue toward Namche, returning to its lively hub after days in the higher wilderness. Overnight in Namche.

DAY 18 – Trek to Lukla

Your final trekking day follows the Dudh Koshi valley back toward Lukla, retracing suspension bridges, villages, and riverside paths. Reaching Lukla brings a sense of closure and celebration, often shared with the trekking team in the evening, marking the end of the mountain journey. Overnight in a lodge in Lukla.

DAY 19 – Flight to Manthali and drive to Kathmandu

After breakfast, you walk to Lukla airport for your flight back to Manthali. From there, you continue by road to Kathmandu, arriving later in the day and returning to the comfort of your hotel after the intensity of the mountains. Overnight in Kathmandu.

DAY 20 – Departure

After breakfast, time is free until your transfer to the airport for your international departure, bringing this Himalayan journey of lakes, passes, glaciers, and Everest’s legendary landscapes to a close.
